Woz Cup in Segwaypolo 2010

The players at 2010 Woz Cup was (white shirts) Linus Gunnarson (covered), Erik Bolinder, Alexander van Reisen, Erik Stackenland, Svante Liljewall, and Jonas Bingestam (captain). Steve Wozniak, Aftershocks at the right is cofounder of Apple Computer and has given name to the segway polo tournament event, played yearly since 2006.

Svante Liljewall (nr 5), Stockholm Saints (blue) is fighting against a player from team Blade Pirates from Germany in the Woz Cup 2010 event. Blades won this game 0-2 and moved to 2nd place 2010. In Folsom California 2011, Blade Pirates became World Champions for the first time.

Line up for Stockholm Saints in night game against Rum Runners at Woz Cup on June 11 2010. First victory for swedish team in segway polo in an international tournament. Ever.
Erik S, Linus G, Alexander v R, Erik B, Svante L and Jonas B.

Very grötigt as we say in Sweden. But to win a game in a teamsport you have to score goals with your offensive play aswell as keep your defensive play in control.

Segway polo is played in 4 chucks , each 8 minutes. Here is break between two chucks and referee is calling for some rules to look for.

As rookies Stockholm Saints played defensive at start of the Woz Cup 2010 with two (!) goalkeepers. At the time according to the rules. This was quickly named "Stockholm Syndrome" by the other teams. Jens from Blade Runners tries to score against Erik Stackenland and Linus Gunarson.
.
Some "bad" habits from South Africa was also introduced by the germans in Woz Cup 2010... ;-)

The goal is 2,40 meter wide and 1,70 high. World Champions 2009 and 2010 are Flying Fish from Barbados. Brett Callahan is goalkeeper on a Segway X2 with a bigger wheels, while the other players have Segway I2 models . One of the few player who still plays with his old Segway 912 model is Woz from Aftershocks. You play segway polo with 5 players on each team on a field 39*61 meter.

The speed of a segway is up to 18 km/ hrs. Everyone can "run" at the same pace, making it very equal. Messi (soccerplayer of the year 2010) would not have a advantage over anyone else. One rule is to a disadvantage for a player like Alexander van Reisen (nr 3) . He is lefthanded. You have to play with right hand according to the rules. Erik Bolinder nr. 4 in the back is among the 5/6 people on earth that is righthanded.

Driving the ball in front of you is a crucial part of the game. Olaf Funke is among the best players in the world in this and here he is on the way to score against Stockholm Saints at Stora Skuggan in August 2009. Linus Gunarson tries to catch up.

Jonas Bingestam is watching battery power prior to game. A segway runs on battery that will last for a game or two. Then it needs to charge. During a tournament almost all segways is provided by the hosts. Few of the players have their own. In Sweden you rent Segways or "seggar" as we call it for every practicing event. You will need 3 minutes to learn to ride a segway and about 10-30 minutes to be able to play segwaypolo. It is probably the most fun game on grass as a teamsport. It will grow very fast the next few years because of this. Please contact us or your local segway dealer or event rent for a try. You just have to try this!
The mallet is the same as in polo, but of course shorter. It is softened by foam on the shaft (not shown here) for not risking to hurt players since it is closer game than with horses.
The Ball is soft for running over by segways and does not hurt at all when you are hit by it.

One very important rule is "right of way". The orange player (10) is not allowed to drive in front of the blue nr 5 (Svante) with his segway. Svante has Right of Way to go his path without risking of hitting a player. (Unless a player stand still) . Orange player is allowed to try to get the ball (as in picture) and hook the club but not be in the way of ball posserors move in the direction he is going. Alex (bleu nr 3) tries to hook orange players mallet to help Svante.

Linus with ball (white) is moving forward by leaning the Segway forward while Erik and Rum Runners player is breaking / stopping( as you can see when the segway is vertical) . Rum Runners player (black shirt) is trying to avoid collission (rule: Right of way) and tries another path when he discover that Linus is to far away for hook or has right of way.

Offensive play options at segway polo. Rum Runners nr 11 can a. shoot at goal b. play to the right offensive player (black) c. play to the left black offensive runnersplayer who is moving to a good position for shooting. Since Stockholm Saints have 3 defensive player + goalkeeper in perfect position and Stockholm Saints nr 5 Svante is covering most of the goal it is a decision in a split second to made. Rum Runners did not score in this game and Stockholm Saints good defense play was a major part of this swedish suceess.
Historic score and first win for the Saints. Fore sure. Will only be a milestone to the swedish first win as World Champions 2011 on June 19, 2011...

A free kick with a perfect "Tigershoot"-swing from teamcaptain Michael from Blade Pirates. Look at the backswing at last pic. You will reach up to 30 meter depending on windfactor with a shoot like this.

Erik Stackenland, Stockholm Saints (1) in a ball position against Blade Pirates, worlds second best segwaypoloteam 2010.

Mental preparation 1. Prior to Woz Cup start 2010 was this radio interview with team captains at Bridgetown, Barbados Radio station.

Mental preparation 2. "We will beat the germans". On the field. Olaf Funke, Funky Turtles is not so sure this will happend. But Stockholm Saints got their revenge with a win 3-2 in Woz Cup 2010 efter the loss in "the Virgin Game" in August 2009. ;-)

Olaf Funke, Funky Turtles, President of ISPA after changing Game shirt with Woz at postparty event of Woz Cup 2010. The friendship among all players and the spirit of the tournament is very special. It will be so as well 2011. In Folsom, California, USA.

The coolest segwaypoloplayer on earth. Ever. Forever. Victor Miller, Silicon Valley Aftershocks, author of the screenplay to movie "Friday 13th" and oldest player in the segway polo circuit in red cap. Fellow teammembers Woz, Dicarlo, Clark and Costa is chasing the World Champ Flying Fish at Woz Cup 2010.

The Black Rose from California is taking a break. 4 teams at Woz Cup 2010 had female players participating. So in this lovely sport you can be a girl teenager as well as an old gentleman. Everyone has fun. Welcome to be part of a segway polo experience near you.

The real name of the teammembers in Black Rose was all complicated and hard to pronounce, like Steve Long... so hence they all got artistname like Brazilian soccerplayers. War, Fear, Bellamy, Famine and Decay in a discussion. Playing the Saints it was evil against good. Good prevailed just like in the fairytails winning match of 5th place 3-2 in 5th chucks.

Global friendship created. Azriel Crichlow, Rum Runners from Barbados is signing a shirt at back of Bob Quinlan, California Junkyard Dogs, USA after exchanging shirt with Erik Bolinder (4), Stockholm Saints, Sweden/ Sverige after Woz Cup Tournament ending 2010.

Flying Fish, Barbados, World Champions 2010 in Segwaypolo for 2nd time following up 2009 win.
